Making a difference
St Peter and St Paul's, Warsop

A grant of £3,000 was awarded to us on 29 March 2010 as a contribution towards plaster repair and redecoration within our church. St Peter and St Paul's is a beautiful Grade I listed building situated on a hill overlooking a broad expanse of peaceful parkland known locally as the Carrs. Over a number of years plaster and paintwork within the church had begun to deteriorate to a point where flakes (some quite substantial) covered adjacent pews on a regular basis. Apart from it looking unsightly it had become a concern that members of the congregation could be struck by larger flakes falling from the higher parts of the nave during a service. In addition, plasterwork in the tower area was particularly badly affected.

The sums quoted for this work would account for a substantial part of our fabric budget so the grant awarded by the Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust was welcomed with gratitude. As well as awarding this grant the NHCT has also helped us to finance Chancel roof repairs because, similar to many churches, we had been plagued by numerous lead thefts. These thefts depleted our finances to a seriously low point forcing us into looking at terne coated steel as an acceptable lead substitute, thus reducing the possibility of further thefts. This proved to be an expensive undertaking and the help we received from the Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust could not have come at a more appropriate time.
