Making a difference
St James the Great church, Brinsley

After a number of years with the central heating boiler 'limping along', it finally died in April 2009. This was a gas fired boiler installed in the early 1980s and located externally in a small boiler house.
This was a particular blow, following the unavoidable decision to demolish the church hall in early 2008, due to the lack of accessible facilities, health and safety issues and repair costs. Although most of the non-worship activities had been transferred into the church, it was obvious that this could not continue without heating. Unfortunately, due to unavoidable reasons, there was an extended delay in obtaining a detailed specification for a replacement boiler. Quotations were eventually received in October 2009, by which time the sad decision had been made to transfer all worship to the parish's sister church of St Michael's and All Angels.

Funds were extremely limited and therefore a grant application was made to the Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust, an organisation which the parish has supported for a number of years through the NHCT Ride and Stride event.
The PCC was delighted to be granted 25% of the cost of two wall hung boilers, located inside the church, enabling heat to be restored by 18 December 2009, just in time for worship to re-commence in St James on 20 December 2009.
